DPR-70, DPR-75 AND NPF-57 DOCKET NOS. 50-272, 50-311 AND 50-354 Gentlemen:

This letter provides the 30 day response to Generic Lett.er 97-04 for the Salem and Hope Creek Generating Stations. Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) has reviewed the generic letter requirements, and will complete the requested actions within the required 90 day timeframe specified. Specifically, PSE&G will complete the following by January 5, 1998: 1) provide the general methodology used to calculate the head loss associated with* Emergency Core Cooling System (ECCS) suction strainers; 2) identify the required and available Net Positive Suction Head (NPSH) for the ECCS pumps; 3) describe any differences between the design-basis NPSH analysis and the most recent analysis reviewed and approved by the NRC for which a safety evaluation was issued; and 4) provide the requested information concerning containment overpressure in the NPSH analyses.
