Salem Generating Station Public Service Electric & Gas Company Hancock's Bridge, New Jersey 08038 IDENTIFICATION OF OCCURRENCE:

Non-Radioactive Waste Effluent Total Suspended Solids Exceeded Environmental Technical Specification Limit CONDITIONS PRIOR TO OCCURRENCE:

During preparation of the annual non-radioactive environmental operating report, the average annual (1978) suspended solids tration in the discharge from the non-radioactive waste basin was calculated to be 34.7 mg/l. This exceeds the Environmental Technical Specification limit of 25 mg/l. DESIGNATION OF APPARENT CAUSE OF OCCURRENCE:

The cause of this occurrence was an abnormally high number of demineralized regenerations necessary to support the initial flushes required for Unit 2 startup preparation and service water quench for steam generator blowdown which was used for part of 1978. ANALYSIS OF OCCURRENCE:

Not Applicable CORRECTIVE ACTION: Since the 1979 Refueling Outage, a clarifier has been put in operation to pretreat the water from the station wells before being piped to the demineralizer system. This has reduced the number of regeneration cycles of the demineralizer resins. A three foot cinderblock wall has been installed across the non-radioactive waste retention basins to prevent precipitated solids from being pumped to the treatment basin. These actions should reduce the suspended solids discharged from the non-radioactive liquid waste system to the Delaware River so that further corrective action will not be required.
