Re: Docket numbers 05000275 and 05000323
Dear Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards and Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation,
This is a letter of support for the Diablo Canyon License Renewal Application. Per my citys regulations, I must state that I am writing on my own, without a vote of concurrence from my Council. Please consider the use of my title for identification purposes only.
I encourage you to support the License Renewal Application for Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant. I am sure you are aware of the statewide benefits DCNPP provides, including 9% of the electricity produced in California. With the transition to electric vehicles, the need for clean energy is only going to grow. Some cities have banned natural gas appliances, which will make demand even higher. DCNPP is part of the transition to a future that will truly make an impact on the negative effects of climate change.
For the constituents I represent, and our county in general, relicensing is vitally important. PG&E is the largest private employer in San Luis Obispo County. It provides high-paying head-of-household jobs that support families. Add to that the private vendors that PG&E works with to operate the plant, and the economic impact becomes even more significant.
I see nuclear energy as a bridge away from the old, wasteful sources of energy toward a post-industrial future. While its not without its risks and impacts, there is no immediate or smooth way to transition to clean energy. It will take time, and yet climate change is upon us and requires us to act swiftly. As we charge toward a cleaner future, there is no way to do that without the contributions of DCNPP. It is my hope that you will support its license renewal as a way to move us forward.
Sincerely,
Mayor Caren Ray Russom, Arroyo Grande, San Luis Obispo County, CA
