[External_Sender] Dont prioritize nuclear power over solar. Shut down the Diablo Canyon plant.
Continued operation of the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant would not be good for Californias plans to transition away from fossil fuels. Although nuclear power does not release carbon dioxide, its difficulty of adjusting its power output, with it producing consistent energy day and night, it will crowd out the development of sustainable energy sources, in particular solar power, but also wind power, which are the keys to a sustainable economy.
While Diablo Canyon operates during the day, when solar panels are at their peak output, the grid will have much more energy than is being used, and much energy storage would be needed to store both the nuclear energy and the solar energy.
Energy storage is expensive, and keeping nuclear power on line either will necessitate a need for more storage, or it will suppress sustainable-energy developmentenergy that doesnt produce toxic waste, and risk contaminating many square miles with it if the Hosgri Earthquake Fault slips or the brittle cooling pipe breaks.
Constantly-on nuclear power would flatten the duck curve, of energy-use high during the working day, then down during the commuter hours, then up again for home evening use. But his actually would not be good since that would suppress development of sustainable, rooftop energy, which is used near where it is generated, relieving stress on the grid, but payoff of solar panel loans would be lengthened as the selling of much of the daytime solar power would not be accepted into the fully charged grid. If Diablo Canyon is operating around the clock including during the sunniest part of the day, the expensive nuclear power would suppress the ability of solar panel owners to sell much of their excess power.
We should do what we can to encourage the adoption of rooftop solar and other clean, sustainable energy with its lower cost than nuclear and even fossil fuels, its generation near points of use, and small-scale and comparatively rapid deployment. Part of doing this is shutting down the old, dangerous, and expensive Diablo Canyon plant.
