If check valves of the types of concern are used, an inspection and testing program is to be initiated.

Palisades has completed the requested review. No Anchor Darling Model S350W swing check valves are used at Palisades. Palisades does use swing check valves of similar design; however, none of the similar valves use ASTM A 193 Grade B6 type 410 stainless steel for internally preloaded bolting applica-tions. Palisades does have a Check Valve Preventive Maintenance Program which requires an inspection of internal bolting when applicable. Palisades actions in response to this Bulletin are considered complete.

CONSUMERS POWER COMPANY Palisades Plant Docket 50-255 - License DPR-20 RESPONSE TO NRC BULLETIN 89-02 At the request of the Commission and pursuant to the Atomic Energy Act of 1954 and the Energy Reorganization Act of 1974, as amended, and the Commission's Rules and Regulations thereunder, Consumers Power Company submits our response to NRC Bulletin 89-02 dated July 19, 1989, entitled, "Stress Corrosion Cracking of High-Hardness Type 410 Stainless Steel Internal Preloaded Bolting in Anchor Darling Model S350W Swing Check Valves or Valves of Similar Design." Consumers Power Company's response is dated January 17, 1990.
