September Operations Summary Nuclear Heatup continued this month. Safety relief valve '(SRV) testing and low pressure testing of RCIC for Test' Condition HEATUP were completed, as'was the constant heatup rate calibration for the power range nuclear instrumentation. HVAC flow verification (M99) preoperational testing is expected to be completed by mid October.

Perry experienced its first scram while critical this month on September 2, 1986. The reactor scram occurred due to an upscale trip on the Intermediate Range Neutron Monitors (IRM) during initial nuclear.heatup testing. A sudden increase in sensed steam pressure caused the steam bypass valves to fully open resulting in a reactor pressure decrease. Subsequent operator action to reshut the bypass valves combined with an isolated pressure transmitter caused all the steam bypass valves to shut resulting in a void collapse and. neutron flux spike. Following corrective maintenance on the Steam Bypass System'and other maintenance activities, the reactor returned to operation on September 7.
