SUBJECT:

DERAILMENT OF RAILROAD CAR CARRYING EMPTY SPENT FUEL SHIPPING CASK On January 9,1988, at 1:30 p.m. (CST), one set of wheels of a railroad car carrying an empty spent fuel shipping cask derailed. At the time of the derailment, the car was being moved by licensee personnel between two. sets of tracks on licensee controlled property. The derailrrent. occurred because a track switch was in the wrong position. The railroad car remained in an. upright position and there were no personnel injuries. This preliminary notification is issued for information only. The resident inspectors will monitor the licensee corrective actions.

There have been no news media inquires regarding this matter.

Neither the licensee nor the NRC plans to -issue a press release.

The state of Nebraska will be informed.

Region IV received notification of this occurrence by telephone call from the senior resident inspector at 7:45 a.m. on January 11, 1988.
