Subject:

TRANSPORTATION INCIDENT IN SOUTH CAROLINA On December 26, 1996, a tractor trailer carrying a Vectra shipping cask broke down on a highway in South Carolina. The trailer was a low-boy type and one of the welds broke, which caused the trailer to fall to the ground. The cask contained radioactive water cleanup resins from the Cooper Nuclear Power Station. The cask was in transit to the Barnwell waste disposal site.

The State Department of Health and Environmental Control responded to the scene. There was no release of radioactive material and the cask was undamaged. The cask was placed onto another trailer and successfully transported to a vectra facility in Columbia, South Carolina. The cask will remain there until Vectra resolves issues with an expired i transportation permit for the overweight trailer.

The Cooper Station notified the NRC (Event Notification Number 31514).

Region II discussed with the State. There was local media interest from a  ;

TV station in Columbia, South Carolina. )
