Subject:

Explosion in Off-Gas Building At 5:30 a.m., January 7, 1976, an explosion occurred in the off-gas building l

during normal power operations. There were no reported fatalities or i

personnel injuries, no reported damage to safety related equipment, and there was no evidence that plant security was breached. The north end of.the off-gas building (small Butler Building) was severely damaged.

The licensee believes that the explosion was caused by a build-up of off-

' gases in the off-gas building due to some type of blockage in the stack.

The licensee immediately scrammed the reactor following the explosion.

Further investigation of the incident-is awaiting the arrival of a special investigation team from their corporate offices.

.The licensee has conducted preliminary radiation and contamination C

surveys. On-site results are.not known by IE a't' thil7isia. 0ff-site --

readings were not above normal background.

i Nebraska Public Power District plans a press release. High public interest i

- is expected.

Two inspectors are being dispatched to the site.
