Hydrogen Explosion - Off-Gas System Sump At 9:40 a.m.,
November 5, 1975, an explosion occurred while maintenance
~
vas being performed on the Off-Gas System Sump under the elevated release point (stack) to the Off-Gas System. The sump is the collection point for stack condensate. The cover was removed from the sump by maintenance personnel, the explosion occurring when the portable air sampler was started by the accompanying health physics personnel.
One of the maintenance personnel was injured at the shoulder and neck.
W All personnel participating in the maintenance and health physics monitoring were hospitalized for examination at' the Auburn Hospital. Auburn Hospital initiated their Disaster Plan. The injured maintenance worker is being transferred to the University of Nebraska Hospital for further treatment due to the nature of the injury. The injury was identified as burns from the explosion. It was indicated that the other personnel were to be released from the Auburn Hospital.
The extent of contamination has not been determined; however, the initial report indicates contamination did not exceed three hundred counts per g
minute.

Nebraska Public Power District plans a press release. High public interest is expected.
