LOSS OF MAIN CONDENSER VACUUM At 7:55 a.m. (CDT), July 14, 1989, plant operators reduced power from 100 percent to 35 percent in response to rapidly decreasing condenser vacuum. /* 8 a.m. (CDT), operators manually scrammed the reactor.

A licensee inspection of the main condenser determined that the vacuum loss was caused by the failure of the turbine boot seal. A'cout 40 inches of the seal had leen torn away in one location, and a 60-inch tear was found in another. In addition, one boat cover plat? was missing, and two cover plates were bent 90 degrees.
