Facility: Illinois Power Company Licensee Emergency Classification:

Clinton Unit 1 X Notification of an Unusual Event Clinton, IL 61727 Alert Site Area Emergency Docket No. 50-461 General Emergency Not Applicable

Subject:

AUTOMATIC SCRAM DUE TO FEEDWATER VALVE FAILURE At 6:15 p.m. (CDT), May 24, 1987, the reactor scrammed from 18 percent power when a fe:dwater regulating valve failed in the open position, increasing the flow of water to the reactor. The increased flow increased the neutron flux, resulting in the Average Power Rang 2 Monitor automatically scranning the reactor when the flux level reached the indicated setpoint.

The licensee plans to remain shutdown to investigate the cause of the valve failure and to perform scheduled maintenance activities.

This event was similar to a manual reactor scram on May 6, 1987, when the same feedwater regulating valve malfunctioned.

Region III (Chicago) is monitoring the licensee's course of action.

The State of Illinois will be notified.

I The NRC Operations Center was notified of this event at 7:13 p.m. (CDT), May 24, 1987. This information is current as of 11:30 a.m. (CDT), May 26, 1987.
