DTTIO PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-III-87-25 Date February 23, 1987 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information is as initially received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region III staff on this date.

Subject:

SICK-IN Twelve of 15 operators (licensed and nonlicensed) failed to report to work for the 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. shift on February 23, 1987. The licensee said all 12 called in sick.

The licensee attempted to fill the vacancies by calling in personnel from the 3:00 p.m.

to 11:00 p.m. shift er calling in those operators who were on their scheduled day off.

Th2 licensee was unsuccessful, however, in reaching anyone.

The licensee is currently meeting its technical specification manning requirements for cold shutdown by using supervisory Senior Reactor Operators and non-licensed op:rators in training.

The licensee has not been officially informed of the reason behind the sick-in; however, a licensed reactor operator was fired on February 20, 1987.
