Subject:

UNSCHEDULED SHUTDOWN REQUIRED BY TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS l At 9:58 P.M. on October 9, the licensee entered mode 2 (hot shutdown) and declared an unusual event. This followed unsuccessful attempts to identify the cause of unidentified reactor coolant leakage of greater than 1 gpm. This declaration was due to the unscheduled shutdown required by Technical Specifications for the 1.5 gpm' leak from the #11A RCP controlled bleed off line. Initial reports from technicians viewing the leak from several feet indicate that it is the result of a cracked weld on the #11A RCP/ bleed of f line junction. The licensee has had similar occurances at the same location in the past. The plant is proceeding to cold shutdown to effect repairs. Current plans are to drain the RCS to below the level of the leak and either repair the weld or replace the seal package entirely. The repair is estimated to take 5 days.

The State of Maryland has been notified.
