The information presented is as' initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Facility: Calvert Cliffs-1 (DN 50-317)

Lusby, Md.

Subject:

UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE - FISH IMPINGEMENT Fish impingement rates on the order of tens of thousands /hr were reported for the time period 0300 to 0600 hours0.00694 days
0.167 hours
9.920635e-4 weeks
2.283e-4 months
on 7/21/76. Very low dissolved oxygen (D.O.) levels both inside and outside the forebay curtain walls appar-

' ently were a causitive factor. The fish were identified as predominately spc menhaden and croakers in that order. The licensee is gathering data with i

regard to total numbers of fish and the extent of the D.O. problem which

!. is apparently not plant related. Preliminary information indicates many fish were gathered in the shore areas along the Chesapeake Bay and were easily caught by shore seining. Many fish were not dead but appeared stressed. Current impingement rates were back to normal low.

Media interest is expected because of public hearings on-going at Waldorf, Md. relative to proposed Douglas Point facility. The Stace 1

of Maryland has been and is being kept informed. A press release is t not planned.

1 L ' ~ Region I, NRC, Philadelphia, Pa. received notification of this occurrence i by telephone from Chief Environ. Engineer, BG&E at 1500 hr.,.7/22/76.
