December 13, 1976 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF SAFEGUARDS EVENT--

PNS-76-67 I

This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE national security or public interest significance.

The information oresented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff as of this date.

Facility: Baltimore Gas and Electric Company Calvert Cliffs, Units No. 1 and 2 (DNs 50-317 and 50-318)

Subjeet:

BOMB THREAT The customer service switchboard operator, of the Baltimore Gas and j

Electric Company, received a bomb threat from an anonymous calier, who identified himself as "The Shadow." The call was received at 6:30 p.m.

on December 10, 1976. The caller stated that he was going to bomb the BG&E Company. No specific time was mentioned.

Later.in the conversation l

the caller included in the threat, the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Station.

The security forces at the Calvert Cliffs site were alerted and additional security vigilance exercised. The FBI and Balt1more Police have been notified by the licensee.

Media interest is expected because of current news interest in the entire nuclear industry. The State'of Maryland has been informed.

Region I, NRC, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the licensee at 8:03 p.m., December 10, 1976.
