1990.

Subject:

Response to Notice of Violation and Status of l Open Item 89-010-03 i I

f Enclosed is the response to the Notice of Violation contained .;

in Reference 2. The information contained with the response is exempt from disclosure according to Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Section 73 21 (c)(2).

Additionally, in the cover letter of Reference 2, a status was requested on the corrective actions for the weakness i regarding maintenance support for security equipment (Open i Item 89-010-03). A majority of the support of security ,

equipment is provided by the Instrumentation and Control (I&C) Shop. In order to improve the support provided, fifteen additional I&C repairmen have been hired. There are now approximately thirty full time I&C repairmen and approximately ten individuals involved in activities such as work packages preparation, who are also trained I&C repairmen who fill in as needed. ,

Starting in mid-February, no more than one sixth of I&C personnel will be scheduled for continuing I&C training at one time. 1his will ensure sufficient manpower for support of plant equipment including the security equipment. A goal of showing an improving trerd in maintenance support of security equipment by the beginning of March 1990 has been established.

NRC-90-0020 Page 2 In addition to providing adequate support of security equipment, potential enhancement of I&C maintenance of -

security equipment by increasing the expertise of I&C in the  !

area of security equipment is being evaluated. Options  !

include increasing the training on security equipment for all I&C repairmen, establishing I&C Shop " experts" on security l equipment, and working closer with vendor and security staff f on repair and testing of security equipment.
