Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant - Unit 2 NRC Bulletin 88-01 Defects in Westinghouse Circuit Breakers I

NRC Bulletin 88-01 was issued on February 5, 1988 requiring the inspection of Westinghouse Type DS circuit breakers. These inspections were to include Westinghouse DS-416 reactor trip and bypass breakers and all other Class 1E Westinghouse Type DS breakers.

By letter dated April 4, 1988, Alabama Power Company reported the results of the inspections performed on the reactor trip and bypass breakers at Farley Nuclear Plant, Units.1 and 2.

By letter dated June 9, 1988, the results of the inspections were reported for all 7ther Westinghouse Type DS, Class 1E breakers at Farley Nuclear Plant, Unit 1.

Alabama Power Company has performed the required short and long term inspections on all other Class 1E Westinghouse Type DS breakers in Farley Nuclear Plant, Unit 2.

These inspections, which were completed on May 1, 1989, encompassed a total of forty-seven Westinghouse Type DS breakers.

The forty-seven breakers include eleven DS-416 Class 1E breakers-and _

thirty-six DS-206 Class 1E breakers. All forty-seven breakers required new pole shafts due to failure of the' velds to meet NRC Bulletin 88-01 requirements. All forty-seven breakers were found to have acceptable breaker mechanism alignment. The forty-seven new pole shafts were inspected prior to installation and passed NRC Bulletin 88-01 Criteria 6.1.1,.7.1 and 7.2.

This action completes the requirements of NRC Bulletin 88-01 for Farley Nuclear Plant, Unit 2.
