SUBJECT:

OPEN ITEMS ASSOCIATED WITH CHAPTER 20 CF THE AP600 SAFETY EVALUATION REPORT (SER) -

Dear Mr. Liparulo:

The Reactor Systems Branch has provided their open items conceming Chapter 20 of the SER -

to the projects staff. These open items can be found in the enclosure to this letter.

You have requested that portions of the information submitted in the June 1992, application for design certification be exempt from mandatory public disclosure. While the staff has not completed its review of your request in accordance with the requirements of 10 CFR 2.790, that portion of the submitted information is being withheld from public disclosure pending the staffs final determination. The staff concludes that these fo!'ow on questions do not contain those portions of the information for which exemption is sought. However, the staff will withhold this letter from public disclosure for 30 calendar days from the date of this letter to allow Westinghouse the opportunity to verify the staffs conclusions. If, after that time, you do not request that all or portions of the information in the enclosures be withheld from public disclosure in accordance with 10 CFR 2.790, this letter will be placed in the Nuclear Regulatory Commission Public Document Room.

If you have any questions regarding this matter, you may contact me at (301) 415-1132.

Slocerely, .

OPEN ITEMS ASSOCIATED WITH CHAPTER 20 ,

650.35F: lasue A 9: Anticipated Transient Without Scram 10 CFR 50.62 requires the automatic 'nitiation of the auxiliary feedwater system under conditions indicative of an ATWS. The AP600 does not include this design feature, but instead automstically initia'es the PRHR system. The applicant should request an exemption from the 10 CFR 50.62 for automatic initiation of auxiliary fecdwater, and update the discussion in SSAR Section 1.9.4.2.2 accordingly.

650.36F: Issue 105: Inte:Tacing System t.OCA All Pressure isolation Valves (FIV) in the RNS, CVS, and PSS should be included in AP600 Technical Specification Section 3.4.16, and should be subject to periodic PlV leak festing.  ;

WCAP-14425 does not provide the relieving capacity and set pressure of de makeup system relief valves, as well as an analysir to demonstrate that they have been properly sized. The relieving capacity and set pressure of the CVS makeup system relief valves, as well as their bases, should be documented in the SSAR.
