Dear Mr. Syrota:
It was a pleasure to meet with you and other members of the La Hague staff j
during my recent visit to France. In addition to our candid discussions, I want to thank you for accompanying me on my tour of the reprocessing and vitrification facilities, the excellent travel arrangements provided by J
l COGEMA, your gracious hospitality, and the photographs that were recently forwarded which will be a continual reminder of our wonderful visit.
I was favorably tu. pressed with the operations at La Hague and Melox. These-visits were important to me because, as I explained, if spent fuel reprocessing and mixed oxide fuels (M0X) technology or vitrification are i
utilized in the U.S. for dismantled weapons disposition, NRC may be designated as the responsible regulatory authority. The first hand observation of these processes was, therefore, particularly valuable.
i Incidently, while in South Africa I did have an opportunity to tour the MLIS facility during my visit to the Atomic Energy Corporation.
It was very informative, and.I appreciate any assistance on your part to facilitate this.
I invite you to visit the Nuclear Regulatory Commission any time you may be in the U.S.
i Sincerely, i

Dear Mr. Thompson:
Thank you' for your letter of October 11, 1996, inviting the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to become a member of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency's Information System on Occupational Exposure (ISOE).
I am pleased to inform you that the NRC plans to transmit a formal acceptance to you through Dr. David Miller, regional coordinator of the North American Regional Technical Center (NARTC), as soon as all provisions of the terms and conditions for accession to the ISOE are clarified by the NARTC coordinator.
At that time, a primary member (and alternate) for the ISOE Steering Group will be identified.
The NRC point of contact for the ISOE Program within the Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research is Dr. E. Vincent Holahan, who can be contacted at (301) 415-6272.
i Sincerely, f
