CHAIRMAN Mr. Thomas G. Weston i

Charg6 d' Affaires U. S. Embassy 100 Wellington St, Ottawa, Canada K1P ST1

Dear Mr. Weston:

I wish to thank you for the opportunity to meet with you to share information on the discussions with officials at AECB on the Canadian nuclear program and other issues of international interest. As I mentioned, we have had a long history of cooperation with Canadian nuclear agencies. And, as a close neighbor, we maintain an interest in developments there in the nuclear area.

After leaving Ottawa, I met with other nuclear officials from Ontario Hydro and Atomic Energy of Canada Limited.

I also toured the Darlington facility and visited the Sheridan Park Engineering Laboratory in Mississauga.

' Discussions involved current operations of Ontario Hydro and AECL, including the possible privatization of the nuclear side of OH and the ongoing reorganization of AECL.

Not only has NRC had a history of cordial cooperation with the various Canadian nuclear agencies, but this relationship, as I understand it, also has extended to staff at the Embassy there.

In this regard, I would like to thank Mr. Harold Foster for his effort in coordinating this visit and for the continual day-to-day effort to keep NRC informed of significant developments in the Canadian nuclear arena.

Please pass on my sincere thanks to him.

Again, I thank you for your hospitality and the opportunity to share with you 1

'ome of the current nuclear issues in the United States and Canada.

Sincerely, b

l Shirley Ann Jackson cc:

Harold Foster
