Dr. William Hancox Vice President, Strategic Development Atomic Energy of Canada Limited l 344 Slater Street l Ottawa, Canada KlA 0S4

Dear Dr. Hancox:

I would like to thank you and the other members of- the Atomic Energy of Canada Limited staff for the most informative tour of the Sheridan Park Engineering Laboratory during my recent visit.  ;

I was particularly pleased to le.trn of AECL's plan to build and operate two Maple X reactors to assure the continued worldwide availability of supply of medical isotopes, particularly Molybdenum-99, worldwide.

As you mentioned, NRC is currently undertaking a review with an eye toward I streamlining our efforts in the nuclear safety area and making.them more l

efficient. I, therefore, can appreciate your recently announced plans to reorganize AECL and the need to scale back previous plans. It.does appear that AECL efforts in Korea and China (and possibly in the long run with Turkey.

and Egypt) will be fruitful.

1 Again, I wish you much success in your endeavors and look forward to l continuing to work with your organization. l Sincerely, '

Shirley Ann Jackson lL \
