. Spent Fuel Pool Gate Drop Calculation San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station

Units 2 and 3

1. Letter from R. M. Rosenblum (Edison) to Document Control Desk (NRC), dated December 6, 1995,

Subject:

Amendment Application Numbers 153 and 137, (PCN-449), Storing Nuclear Fuel

2. Letter from Dwight Nunn (Edison) to Document Control Desk (NRC), dated August 30, 1995,

Subject:

Amendment Application N whers 153 and 137 Supplement 1, (PCN-449, Supplement 1), Storing Nuclear Fuel This letter submits for NRC review and approval the enclosed Southern California Edison (Edison) calculation for a drop of a spent fuel pool gate in the spent fuel pool (SFP).

During the review of Amendment Application Numbers 153 and 137, (PCN-449),

Storing Nuclear Fuel (Reference 1), the NRC reviewer noted a change in the assumptions for the number of spent fuel assemblies that could be damaged due to a postulated SFP gate drop. Rather than delay the review of PCN 449, in the cover letter to PCN-449, Supplement 1 (Reference 2) Edison committed to not move a SFP gate except in a safe load path (i.e., no fuel assemblies in the drop zone). Enclosed, for your review, is Edison calculation C-259-1.01.11 CCN 2 and pages 1 and 8 through 18 of CCN 4 which demonstrates that, at a maximum, only one fuel assembly may be damaged due to a SFP gate

-drop. Edison will remove this restriction to the movement of the SFP gate after the NRC reviews and approves this calculation.
