AsdefinedbyTechnicalSpecificationsfortheVermo7'tebe I Nuclear Power Station, Section 6.7.B.1, we are reporting the following nnnrmu. ..ccu,,r.n.e m. ,u,-,.,.,u. .,

As a result of a condition discovered at another boiling water l reactor, an inspection of fuel channels was begun on October 5,1973.

1 Initial results indicate that of a total of 7 inspected- to date, 5  ;

exhibit signs of "through-wall-wear" . This incident is interpreted .]

to be reportable as' defined by Section 1. A.4 of the Technical '

!]

Specifications. The fuel channels provide a barrier to separate two- j parallel flow paths - one to cool the fuel bundles and the other to i cool the bypass region between channels. This discovered wear pattern . j

]

is a partial impairment of channel flow.

j l

As of 0800 on October 12, 1973, a total of 105 channels have been  !

j inspected. Of this number, 28 have been observed to exhibit visible defects. Of these,10 have defects that completely penetrate the channel and the remainf ug 18 have visible defects which do not perforate-the channel, but f ail tc meet the acceptance criteria.

At this time, a precise program dedicated to ultimate. resolution of this problem is being developed. We will advise your office relative to

our total program as soon as final development is completed.
