O'Reilly Director Gentlemen:

REACTOR COOLANT PRESSURE BOUNDARY VALVE WALL THICKNESS VERIFICATION NO. 1 AND 2 UNITS SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION We share your concern over valves in critical systems which may be manufactured with wall thicknesses below the minimum requirements specified by applicable codes and standards and have taken the following measures to assure that specifications are met.

1. Manufacturers supplying reactor coolant pressure boundary valves for Salem Juelear Generating Statfon on direct purchase by PSE&G were cdvised by letter September 10, 1971 that they must meet the requirement of draft ASME Code for Pumps and Valves for Nuclear Power, for minimum wall thickness for bodies.

Since none of the foregoing valves have been received at the plant site to date, the applicable valve vendors have again been readvised by letter that the wall thicknesses of the subject valves shall j be measured by approved procedures and ~ ~ '

that the measurements be documented. A copy of the approved wall thickness checking procedure for each manufacturer.will be on file at the plant site and the wall thickness 8311290118 720810 DR ADOCK 05000{2

, U.S. Atomic Energy O O 7-12-72 Commission measurements for each of the subject valves will be contained in the valve data package.

These valves are expected to be delivered over a 12-month period starting December 1, 1972. Inspections can be made during this period to verify compliance.

2. Reactor pressure boundary valves suppli'ed under the Westinghouse Electric Corporation NSSS contract have been partially shipped to the job site. Those valves which have been received'at the job site are not fully documented as to wall thicknesses. We have initiated a request to Westinghouse to supply these dimensional data from the various valve suppliers. Where the wall thickness data are missing or cannot be supplied by the vendors, wall thicknesses will be remeasured by approved procedures.

It is anticipated that we will start to receive and/or produce valve wall thickness data for Westinghouse supplied valves by October 1, 1972.

We trust that the foregoing information adequately covers your request. Should you desire additional information please feel free to call on us. .

Very truly yours, u
