Dear Mr. Grier:

DOCY,ET NOS. 50-266 AND 50-301 WALL THICKNESS OF VALVES UNITS 1 AND 2 - POINT BEACH NUCLEAR PLANT In accordance with your letter of June 29, 1972 requesting infor-mation verifying that valves important to nuclear safety have adequate wall thickness, we are investigating with our contractor, Westinghouse Electric Corp., the availability of documentation on thickness. A review of valve specifications does not indicate that any documentation of wall thickness was a general requirement of suppliers at the time of valve purchases for Point Beach.

All valves within the scope of your letter which we have reviewed to date have received a hydrostatic test during manufacture and documen-tation is available at Westinghouse on this.

Further, all valves were part of the hydrostatic test of completed systems after installation at the site.

Such hydrostatic tests have long been accepted as adequate proof of strength of pressure retaining parts.

We are investigating with an engineering consultant the feasibility of measuring by non-destructive tests to the 2% tolerance you specify.

Pre-liminarily, we have been informed that thickness measurement closer than 10%

tolerance is considered impractical, and that the measurement of cast valves by ultrasonic techniques is frequently not possible.

We are not aware of any problems resulting from the condition you j

are investigating. Of the many thousands of valves which Wisconsin Electric and other utilities have used in fossil fueled plants, there has to our knowl-l edge never been a valve failure due to inadequate wall thickness as a result of manufacturing error. As you did not reveal the details of the problem which caused your investigation, and because we have not learned of any fail-ures due to any uneven thickness of valve bodies, we do not know the basis or extent of your concern.
