SEP 3 015'M MEMORANDUM FOR: Robert Bernero, Director, Division of Systems and Reliability Research, RES FROM:

Frank Schroeder, Acting Director, Division of Safety Technology, NRR

SUBJECT:

SAFETY INJECTION SIGNAL RESET The enclosed memorandum describes our review of a potential problem at the Point Beach reactors of negating the automatic initiation of containment spray if the Safety Injection Signal (SIS) is reset. In other reactor plants there may be other safety functions that could be adversely affected by SIS reset.

We recomend that the IREP effort should, as one of its products, yield the information necessary to evaluate the reliability of ECCS and engineered safety feature (ESF) initiation logic, with the objective of identifying potential unreliabilities in design of either eoufpment alone or the combined man-machine interface. Particular attention should be pined on the effect of SIS reset on negating automatic initiation of ESF functions.
