I Docket Nos:

50-272, 50-311, 50-327' 50-328 MEMORANDUM FOR:

Olan Parr, Cnief, Auxiliary Systems Branch, OSI FROM:

Themis P.

Speis~ Chief, Reactor Systems Branch, OSI

SUBJECT:

AFW FLOW REQUIREMENTS FOR SALEM AND SEQUOYAH Reactor.Systems Branch has reviewed responses.by Salem, Units 1 and 2, and S~quoyah, Units 1 and 2, to the. NRG information request of September 21, 1979, "Basis for Auxiliary Feedwater System Flow Requirements.

11 Our comments are as follows:

1.

The auxiliary feedwater system must have a capacity to supply at least 440 gallons per minute total (to the steam generators to meet referenced

,analyses' assumptions).

2. 'The above auxiliary feedwater capacity must be supplied to at least two steam generators. (in. order. to provtcle adequate heat transfer area).
3.

The aux*il iary feedwater system must be g~arariteed to satisfy requirements inumbers 1 and 2 for an initiating ~tv.ent pl us Auxiliary Systems Branch failure Griteria for auxiliary feedwater systems"

4.

The licensing ana.1yses (feedwater 1 ine break) assume operator action at 10 minutes to properly distribute auxiliary feedwater flow.

Auxiliary Systems Branch should determine the acceptability of this assumed time for

  • operator actions to assure adequ*ate aux*il iary feedwater system performance following a feedwater 1 ine break event.
5.

Reactor Systems Branch considerations impose no upper bound for maximum auxiliary feedwater. flow rates permissible for these plants; however, a bound may be set /lD~ased on a1nother branch's Branch criteria 7 for example, Containment Systems Branch.

Containment Systems may be consulted to-verify maximum* penrnissible auxiliary feedwater flow rate.
