OCT 171ssa Docket Nos.: 50-348, 50-354 E10RNiCU'4 FOR: Olan Parr, Chief, Auxiliary Systems Branch, DSI FR04:
Themis P. Speis, Chief, Deactor Systems Branch, DSI
SUBJECT:
AFW FLOW REQUIREMENTS FOR FARLEY, UNITS 1 & 2 Reactor Systens Branch has revied responses by Farley, Units 1 and 2 to the NRC inforation request of Octcber 13,1979, " Basis for Auxiliary Feedwater System Flow Requin3ments." Our comments are as follows:
1.
350 GPM AFW flow thethe SGs has been demonstrated to be sufficient to meet acceptance criteria for transients and accidents. Therefore, the AFV system must have the CaDacity to suDply at least 350 gpm total to the SGs.*
2.
The above auxiliary feedwater capacity must be supplied to at least two steam generators (in order to provide adequate heat transfer area).
3.
The auxiliary feedwater system must be cuaranteed to satisfy requirements numbers 1 and 2 for an initiating event plus Auxiliary Systems Branch failure criteria for auxiliary feedwater systems.
a.
The licensing analyses (feedwater line break) assume operator action at 10 minutes to properly distribute auxiliary feedwater flow. Auxiliary Systems Branch should detennine the acceptability of this assumed time for ooerator actions to assure adecuate auxiliary feedwater system perfomance following a feedwater line break event.
5.
Reactor Systems Branch considerations froese no upper bound for maximum fuxiliary feedwater flow rates pennissible for these plants; however, a bound may be set based on another branch's Branch criteria, for example, Containment Systems Branch. Containment Systems may be consulted to verify maximum cemissible auxiliary feedwater flow rate.
Themis P. Spets, Chief Reactor Systems Branch cc: See next page Division of Systems Intecration
- An exception to this required flow rate is that only 150 cpm has been shown to be required for the first 10 minutes of a fee +ater line break (350 crn thereafter. See item 4)
