Gentlemen:

In reference to our letter of March 18, 1981, and in response to the requirements of 10 CFR 50.48.C.5, we are providing an update on the statt j

for Sections III-C, III-J, and III-0 of Appendix R.

t

,III-J Emergency Lighting:

l We have completed installation of emergency lighting in accordanc.e with the requirements of this paragraph, that is, for all areas that do not require a j

plant shutdown for installation. The only area that remains to be completed is i

the Control Room, which will require an outage for installation.

In accordance with provisions of 10 CFR 50.48.C., the Control Room area emergency lighting will be installed during the upcoming refueling outage, which is scheduled to start January 1, 1982.

)

III-0 011 Collection Systems for Reactor Coolant Pump:

I We will provide an oil collectioa system for the reactor coolant pumps in accordance with Section O. All system piping and the oil catch basin ' meet seismic requirements.

Those portions of the system which are attached to the main coolant pump motor are not seismic since the motors themselves are not I

seismic. The system will require a plant shutdown for installation and, in accordance with the provisions of 10 CFR 50.48.C.3, will be installed during the upcoming refueling outage, which is scheduled to start January 1, 1982.

III-G Fire Protection of Safe Shotdown Capability:

i We are unable to provide the pians and schedules for this item as required.

We have filed for an exemption to the requirements of 10 CFR 50.48.C.5 under a separate letter da ted December 1,1981, to Mr. H. R. Denton, Director of Nuclear i

\\dditional time will be necessary to completely define all circuits involved for safe shutdown capability. An extensive computer search and analysis of all associated and non-associated circuits for those systems required for safe shut-down is being conducted.

Before any recommendations or proposed modifications can be made, a thorough review of the data will be required. We do not expect to complete this analysis prior to March 31, 1982.

A more detailed explanation of the reasons for our request for extension are contained in our letter to Mr. H. R.

Denton dated December 1, 1981.

If you have any questions concerning this response, please contact my office.
