HAND DELIVERED James A. Laurenson, Chairman Atomic Safety and Licensing Board U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission - --

Washington, D.C. 20555

Dear Judge Laurenson:

Enclosed is Suffolk County's Status Report Regarding Need For Additional Time To File Draft Em3rgency Planning Contentions which is being submitted today pursuant to the ASLB's Order of May 5, 1983. The status report requests that the Board grant additional time to review LILCO's offsite emergency plan and to submit draft contentions. The County is authorized to represent that the Town of Southampton, SOC, and NSC also join in the County's request for an extension.

In its status report of June 7, 1983, counsel for LILCO requested, for LILCO and on behalf of the NRC Staff as well, the opportunity to respond to the County's status report by Monday, June 13, 1983. The County does not believe LILCO or the Staff actually need this opportunity. In a conference call held on June 2, 1983 and another telephone call with counsel for LILCO on June 6, 1983, LILCO was apprised of all the bases for the County's extension request, with the exception of the County's invitation to appear before Governor Cuomo's Task Force in late June. Thus, with a single exception, counsel for LILCO has had an opportunity to address these matters in the LILCO status report, as did the NRC Staff.

Because the present deadline for draft contentions is only two weeks away, the County and other Intervenors respect-fully request an expeditious ruling from the Board on this important matter.
