August 15, 1979 J AM ES F. PU RC ELL s.a e, v:c. pr...a.e t Mr. Ronald Ballard, Chief Environmental Projects Branch, No. 1 Office of the Nuclear Reactor Regulations U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Ccemission Washington, D.C. 205h5 RE: Docket Number 50-3o7

Dear Mr. Ballard:

Enclosed herewith are twenty-five (25) copies of the Spring 1979 Quarterly Reports on the Eailly Generating Statian's Nuclear-1 ecological =cnitoring prcgram. This is the twentieth Quarterly Report en this werk. The Spring 1979 Quarterly Report contains analysis and interpretation of data for the '

period of April through June, 1979 _

Spring 1979 terrestrial sampling was ccnducted in May and included live trapping for small meals, large meal cbservations, roadside counts of rabbits and birds, transect counts of birds, surveys of reptiles and amphi-bians, collection of soil samples, and inspection for vegetative foliar da= age. Although the data indicated decreased animal activity during this sampling period in the vicinity of the Sailly Generating Station site, the changes could be attributed to the severe 1978-1979 winter and the icw tem-peratures experienced the following spring. There are no effects indicated, attributable to Eailly Generating Station, Nuclear-1 construction.

Spring 1979 aquatic sampling was conducted in April and early May. Phyte-plankten, periphyton, zeeplankten, benthos, fisheries, and water quality samples were collected. Much of the aquatic data is analyzed in this Repert.

The remainder, which could not be analyzed in time for this Report, will te discussed in the Su~.=er 1979 Quarterly Repert. In general, aquatic para-meters were predictable and indicated no adverse effects from Sailly Generatir4 Station, Nuclear-1 ccnstruction activities.

In su~ e y, there continues to be no discernible effects in the environment due to construction of Bailly Naclear-1.

Very truly yours, '
