UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555-0001 January 16, 2013 Mr. Paul Freeman Site Vice President NextEra Energy Seabrook, LLC P.O. Box 300 Seabrook, NH 03874

SUBJECT:

SCHEDULE REVISION FOR THE ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW OF THE SEABROOK STATION LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION (TAC NO. ME3959)

Dear Mr. Freeman:

By letter dated May 25, 2010, NextEra Energy Seabrook, LLC (NextEra), submitted an application to renew the operating license for Seabrook Station, Unit 1 (Seabrook) for an additional 20 years. In support of the application and in accordance with Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) Part 51 and 10 CFR Part 54, NextEra also submitted an environmental report for Seabrook. In August 2011, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC or the staff) issued its draft plant-specific Supplement 46 to NUREG-1437, "Generic Environmental Impact Statement for License Renewal of Nuclear Plants (GElS)," supplemental environmental impact statement (SEIS) regarding the environmental impacts of renewing the Seabrook operating license for an additional 20 years.

Subsequent to the issuance of the draft SEIS, by letter dated March 19, 2012, NextEra notified the NRC of significant changes that it made to the severe accident mitigation alternatives analysis (SAMA) related to the Seabrook license renewal application. On May 31,2012, the staff provided a revised environmental review schedule for revising and reissuing the draft SEIS related to the Seabrook license renewal application.

At this point in time, the staff has determined that a revised environmental schedule is needed.

The staff, again, took several factors into consideration, including additional staff resources necessary to complete the review of the SAMA submittal, other ongoing environmental reviews, as well as the need to issue a supplement to the Seabrook license renewal draft SEIS.

P. Freeman -2 The NRC will continue to follow established review procedures and the enclosed environmental review schedule to complete the reviews required by 10 CFR Part 51. If you have any questions on this revised schedule, please contact the NRC's Environmental Project Manager, Ms. Lois James, at 301-415-3306 or bye-mail at 10is.james@nrc.gov.

Sincerely,

,
