SUMMARY
OF October 14, 2008, COOLING TOWERS SPECIAL INSPECTION PUBLIC MEETING.
On October 14, 2008, at 4:00 p.m., a Vermont Yankee Cooling Tower Special Inspection Public Informational Meeting was conducted at the Latchis Theatre, Brattleboro, Vermont. The NRC scheduled this meeting to discuss the results of the NRCs special inspection of the July 11, 2008 and September 16, 2008, Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Station cooling tower circulating water system leakage.
The NRC presented and discussed the results of the special inspection conducted in response to the July 11, 2008 and September 16, 2008 cooling tower leaks at Vermont Yankee. The NRC presentation included a discussion of the special inspection purpose and charter, a summary of the cooling tower events in August 2007, July and September 2008, and the results of the special inspection. Entergy presented details of the cooling tower design and its perspective regarding the towers performance and future plans for upgrades.
The public was invited to observe the meeting and, at the end of the meeting, was offered the opportunity to communicate with the NRC and Entergy regarding the cooling tower performance and the role of the agency in ensuring safe plant operations.
