Docket No.: 50-312 The Honorable Emilio E. Varanini, III Presiding Member, Nuclear Fuel Cycle Committee California Energy Commission 1111 Howe Avenue Sacramento, California 95825
'-
Dear Mr. Varanini:
I am pleased to respond to your mailgram of June 7,1979, to Chainnan Joseph Hendrie of the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Conmission.
Since the substance of your correspondence is a matter at issue now pending before the NRC, I have been directed to provide this response for Chairman Hendrie.
In response to your request, a personal briefing of the California Energy Commission by members of the NRC staff was held on June 21, 1979, at which the issues that you raised in your mailgram were addressed.
I trust that this briefing provided a useful forum for the airing of concerns of the Energy Commission and the public and that you received satisfactory responses to your questions.
(I understand that the afternoon session was devoted to questions from the public and responses from the NRC staff.)
If you have any additional questions concerning the background of the May 7,1979, Rancho Seco Order for shutdown, or the NRC's method of deal-ing with the Order, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely, ga r-nj 11.,
