Engelken, same subject In accordance with provisions of 10CFR50.55(e), your office was advised, by telephone, on March 3, 1982, of a potentially reportable condition concerning General Electric (GE) control switches (SBM & SB-9). The above referenced letter of April 1, 1982 was our interim report on the captioned condition.

The WNP-2 Project has determined that the GE SBM control switches are reportable under the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e) as there were deficient l

the GE SB-9 cmitrol switches, the WNP-2 Project has determined them to be not rg artable as none of the switches in question are installed at WNP-2. Attachment A is our final report on the subject condition.

POTENTIAL PROBLEM Two types of GE switches (SBM & SB-9) were identified as potentially having defects which could compromise their ability to function proper-ly. These items were identified by GE Service Advice letters (dated October 17, 1977 and August 1, 1978). These letters are attached for a detailed description of the problem.

APPROACH TO RESOLUTION OF THE PROBLEM Regarding SB-9 control switches, GE Service Advice 721 (PSM) 156.1, was evaluated April 10, 1978 and was determined to be not applicable to WNP-2 as none of the switches in question are in use at WNP-2.

Therefore, the GE SB-9 control switches are considered not reportable.

Regarding SBM control switches, GE Service Advice (721) 204.1, has been evaluated for applicability to WNP-2. WNP-2 does have SBM control switches installed in Class lE applications which need review as they were manufactured between August 1977 and June 1978. A physical inspec-tion will be performed of the applicable switches using the criteria set forth in Service Advice (721) 204.1 to determine if the deficient switches identified by GE have been installed at WNP-2.

STATUS OF PROPOSED RESOLUTION SB 9 - No further action is planned.

SBM Control Switches - A physical inspection was performed of all GE SBM control switches installed in Class IE electrical applications.

Seventy-one (71) SBM control switches were inspected, of which sixteen (16) were of the deficient type identified in GE Service Advice 721 (PSM) 156.1. All 16 switches have been replaced with acceptable swit-ches.

Due to the fact that deficient SBM control switches were installed at WNP-2 in Class IE applications, the Project has determined the GE SBM control switches to be reportable under the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e).

All necessary corrective action has been completed and no further action is planned.
