Enclosure 1 PG&E Letter DCL-02-143 NOVEMBER 2002, OPERATION SUMMARIES DIABLO CANYON POWER PLANT UNITS I AND 2 Summary of Unit 1 Operation Unit 1 remained in Mode 5 (Cold Shutdown) during November for main turbine generator rotor replacement.

Summary of Unit 2 Operation Unit 2 began November in Mode 1 (Power Operation) at approximately 100 percent power. On November 7, 2002, operators began a planned ramp to 20 percent power in response to a forecast of high swells. Power reached 20 percent at 2333 PST. On November 8, 2002, at approximately 0630 PST, high swells and ocean plant-life debris caused high differential pressure across the traveling screens. In response, operators shut down the circulating water pumps, manually tripped the turbine, and shut down the reactor. The unit reached Mode 3 (Hot Standby) at 0643 PST. On November 10, 2002, at 1743 PST, operators paralleled Unit 2 to the grid. On November 11, 2002, operators completed the ramp to approximately 100 percent power.

Actuations of Safety or Pressurizer Power Operated Relief Valves There were no challenges to the pressurizer power operated relief valves, pressurizer safety valves, or steam generator safety valves.

power in early November due to high swell warnings. A high pressure differential across the intake screens, due to high swells and heavy kelp loading, caused operators to shut down circulating water pumps, manually trip the turbine, and shut down the reactor.
