Enclosure 1 PG&E Letter DCL-03-038 MARCH 2003, OPERATION SUMMARIES DIABLO CANYON POWER PLANT UNITS 1 AND 2 Summary of Unit 1 Operation Unit 1 began March in Mode 1 (Power Operation) at approximately 100 percent power.

There were no significant operational activities.

Summary of Unit 2 Operation Unit 2 began March in Mode 6 (Refueling), continuing the refueling outage (2R1 1) that began on February 3, 2003. On March 17, 2003, with Unit 2 in Mode 3 (Hot Standby),

during testing of the digital rod position indication (DRPI), operators manually tripped the reactor due to a mismatch in control rod position indication. On March 24, 2003, operators entered Mode 2 (Startup) and took the reactor critical. On March 26, 2003, operators entered Mode 1 and paralleled Unit 2 to the grid, thus completing the refueling outage. On March 28, 2003, with Unit 2 at approximately 48 percent power, operators initiated an unplanned shutdown to Mode 3 in order to replace a faulty nuclear instrument (NI-42). On March 29, 2003, after replacing and testing NI-42, operators entered Mode 2 and took the reactor critical. On March 30, 2003, operators paralleled Unit 2 to the grid.

Unit 2 ended the month at approximately 44 percent power.

Actuations of Safety or Pressurizer Power Operated Relief Valves There were no challenges to the pressurizer power operated relief valves, pressurizer safety valves, or steam generator safety valves.
