Response to NRC Generic Letter 95-07, " Pressure Locking and Thermal

^

Binding of Safety Related Power-Operated Gate Valves" i

This letter transmits the 60-day required response of Reference (b). Vermont Yankee plans to implement the requested actions outlined in Reference (b) in accordance with i the 90-day and 180-day schedules provided in that Reference.

Vermont Yankee has completed a preliminary evaluation to identify safety-related L motor-operated gate valves that may be susceptible to pressure locking or thermal binding in response to' Generic Letter 89-10. As a result of this evaluation, six (6) r safety-related motor-operated gate valves were modified during the 1995 Refueling i Outage due to susceptibility to pressure locking. Additionally, operating procedures were revised due to thermal binding concerns for one safety-related motor-operated

~ gate valve. This evaluation is currently being reviewed to ensure it meets the intent of the ~ screening evaluation required by Reference (b). This evaluation and any

! required operability' evaluation will be completed in accordance with the schedule

. provided in Reference (b).

[

Vermont: Yankee is also performing a screening evaluation on other safety related i- power-operated (i.e. alr-operated and hydraulically-operated) gate valves to identify any ithat may. be potentially susceptible to pressure locking or thermal binding. This evaluation and any required operability evaluation will be complued in accordance

. with the schedule provided in Reference (b).
