PLANNED DESIGN INSPECTION. DAVIS-BESSE NUCLEAR POWER STATION.

UNIT NO. 1

Dear Mr. Wood:

The purpose of this letter is to inform you of our plans to conduct a design inspection of the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station. We have scheduled the on-site inspection for the periods of May 5 through 9. May 19 through 23. and June 2 through 13. 1997. Your staff has indicated that there are no major conflicts with on-site activities during this period. The team leader and two team members of the inspection team will visit the site between April 2 and April 4.1997, to collect documentation necessary for in-office review and on-site inspection.

Recent NRC inspections at nuclear power reactor facilities have identified numerous findings *where the actual plant configuration or operations were inconsistent with the design basis. licensing basis, or the Updated Safety Analysis Report. Therefore, the NRC has decided to perform design inspections at nuclear power reactor facilities utilizing Inspection Procedure (IP) 93801.

" Safety System Functional Inspection." Two systems will be selected for inspection, and documents pertaining to these systems will be obtained, during the April 2 through 4.1997, visit.

Mr. S.K. Malur. Team Leader. NRR. will interface with you and your staff regarding all matters related to this inspection. The inspection will be

>erformed by a team of five engineers from Sargent and Lundy (S&L) who have 3een contracted by the NRC for this purpose.
