AnorderlyshutdownofUnit81,NineMilePointNuclearStationwasbegunonJuly27,1972duetoincreasing recirculation systemvalvepackingleakagewithinthedrywell.Following repacking oftheaffectedvalves,theunitwasrestarted onJuly30,1972andreached110psigat0700thatday.

Mx.DonaldJ.Skovho1tUnitedStatesAtomicEnergyCommission 0Page2Anagreement hadbeenmadepriortoshutdownwithNationalCylinderGas,anitrogengassupplierinConshohocken, Pa.fordeliveryoftwotrucksofnitrogenonJuly30,1972.Normalinertingrequires4-6hoursandcouldeasilybeaccomplished thatday,wellwithintherequired24hours.However,unknowntostationpersonnel, thegassupplierwashavingdifficulty inobtaining driversforthenecessary twotrucksofnitrogen.

ThestartupoftheUnitbeyond110psigcontinued, basedupontheprioragreement thatnitrogenwouldbearrivingforinertingthatday.Atmidnight, July30,1972withnonitrogenforinertingonsite,itwasdeemednecessary bystationpersonnel toholdthermalpowerto1200MN(t)andnotcontinuewiththenormalscheduled startupuntilthedrywellwasinerted.ThefirsttruckofnitrogenarrivedatthestationthemorningofJuly31,1972andinertingbeganimmediately.

Thedrywellatmosphere wasreducedtolessthanfivepercentoxygenat134Sthatday,reaching3.9percentat1400.Thestartupscheduled thencontinued.
