IntroductionTheNuclearEnergyServices,Materials,Codes&InspectionDepartment,conductedaninserviceeddycurrentexaminationoftheFloridaPower&LightSt.LucieUnitg2SteamGeneratorTubinginOctober,1987.Theextentofthisexaminationincluded1004ofnon-pluggedhotlegandcoldlegtubesinaccordancewithplanttechnicalspecificationsusingmulti-frequencyeddycurrentequipmentanddifferentialbobbincoiltestprobes.TheeddycurrentdatawassubjectedtotwoindependentanalysesusingcertifieddataanalystsfromCombustionEngineering,NDETechnologyandZetec,Inc.DiscrepanciesintheindependentanalyseswereresolvedbyLevelIIIindividualsfromtherespectiveagencies.St.LucieUnitg2containstwoCombustionEngineeringseries67recirculatingsteamgeneratorsidentifiedasPSL-2AandPSL-2B.Eachsteamgeneratorcontainsapproximately8,411u-bendtubesmadeofinconel600.AbaselineeddycurrentexaminationwasperformedinJuly,1982andthefirstinserviceeddycurrentexaminationwasperformedinOctober,1984.AnunscheduledinserviceeddycurrentexaminationwaslastperformedinMarch,1985,duetoprimarytosecondarytubeleakagewhichwasidentifiedandattributedtoflow;inducedvibrationalwearatthediagonalandverticalsupportstraps,referredtoasbatwings(Figures1and2).Toobtainwearprogressiondata,29tubeswhichwerepluggedinMarch,1985werede-pluggedinApril,1986andexaminedusingastandardbobbincoilandasegmentedbobbincoilprobe.Thesegmentedbobbincoilprobeprovidesweardataatbothsidesofthetubeincontactwiththebatwing.TheresultsofthiswearprogressionanalysesispresentedinCombustionEngineeringreportCEN-328datedMay,1986.Applicationof'hewearprogressionmodelandconservativemanagementpracticeduringtheOctober,1987outageresultedin"preventivemaintenanceplugging"ofsix(6)additionaltubesinPSL-2Aandtwo(2)additionaltubesinPSL-2B.Table1providesasummarybysteamgeneratoroftubesexamined,indicationsoftubewallpenetrationandtubesplugged.Table2providesalistingoftubespluggedasaresultoftheOctober,1987examinationandapplicationofwearprogressionmodels.RefertoFigure1asakeytolocationcodes.Atotalof8tubeswerepluggedinthePSL-2Ageneratorand10tubeswerepluggedinthePSL-2Bgenerator.Seven(7)tubesinPSL-2Awerepluggedasaresultofwearatbatwingorverticalsupportstraps.One(1)tubewaspluggedasaresultofwearfromaforeignobject;identifiedbyvisualexaminationtobealengthofweldwireattheperipheryofthetubebundle.Ten(10)tubeswerepluggedinPSL-2Basaresultofwearatbatwingorverticalsupportstraps.Table3providesalistingofallindicationsoftubewallpenetrationbylocationforeachsteamgenerator.

Anumberoftubeshadindicationslocatedatthebatwingareaswhichrepresenttheinitiationoftubewalldamagefromvibrationasdiscussedabove.However,thewearattheseareashasnotadvancedtothepointwhichwillproduceameasurableresultintermsofwallpenetration.Therefore,theseindicationsareidentifiedintheeddycurrentdatabaseandtheaffectedtubeswillbemonitoredduringsubsequentexaminationsorotherwisedispositioned.
