  • The attached Etaluation of the Flood Risk Estimate for the Shoreham Nuclear Power Station is submitted for you'r information according to NRC Board Noti-fication procedures. The evaluation supplements information provided in Board Notification (82-99), Oraft Review and Critique of Previous Probabilistic Accident Assessments for the Shoreham Nuclear Power Station.

[N Ths. staff reviewed applicable portions of the Suffolk County Consultant's (Future Resources Associates, Inc. (FRA)) draft re draft Shoreham Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) concerning port and the preliminary FRA's major l

findings that the PRA underestimated the frequency of certain internal flooding accident sequences at elevation 8 by more than a factor of 1000.

At th'is time the staff believes that flood accident sequences do not contributs to risk significantly. The staff feels that the FRA approach is too conserva-tive but that certain aspects of these flooding sequences should be analyzed further by the applicant and submitted to the staff for further review. ,,

By letter from the NRC (Darrell G. Eisenhut) to Long Island Lighting Company (M. S. Pollock) dated September 29, 1982, the staff re information concerning the risks of internal flooding' quested . additional As indicated in the staff evaluation, certain additional information should be submitted to the NRC for review. The applicant was requested to provide some of this infor-mation in our letter dated September 29, 1982 which was enclosed in Board Notification No. 82-99. The balance of the information request will be forwarded to the applicant in the near future. -
