Dear Dr. Thadani:

j

.:q Enclosed is the March monthly report for the activities sponsored by your Branch. Also included are the compucerized budget summaries and the fee re-covery cost status for each program requiring it.

I would suggest that you and your staff review the reports to determine whether there are any discrep~ancies.

If there are, please notify the principal investigator.

Note that the funds allocated for FIN A-3740 are nearly spent and that the j

NRC program office was informed of this April 13, 1984 as required by revised Manual Chapter 1102, dated September 24, 1982. Please send the balance of d

expected funds so that the level of effort may continue without interruption.

I

~

The funds received for FIN A-3366, as shown on the financial status page, do not reflect the additional $101,000 received in April. The total amount of unbilled costs through March is $10,987, which will be billed to NRC in April.

We hope this me.ets with your approval. If there are any questions re-i garding format, distribution, or badget reporting, please contact Mr. A. J.

j Weiss, Administrative Technical Assistant, FTS 666-4473.

MONTHLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR MARCH 1984 4

" Review of the Probabilistic Risk Assessment for the 1

Shoreham Nuclear Power Plant" o

(FIN A-3740) 4

I. A. Papazoglou (FTS 666-2435) 1; 9

NRC Program Manager:

A. Thadani, Reliability and Risk Assessment Branch NRC Technical Monitor:

1.

Scope / Purpose id 9

The purpose of this project is to review those aspects of the Shoreham PRA leading to the estimates of the frequencies of the accident sequences re-

'd!

sulting in a " core vulnerable" state and to detemine the accuracy of these estimates.

2.

Schedule / Milestones A letter of the findings will be submitted to NRC at the completion of each s

task according to the following schedule.

Task 1: Draft Report 4/15/84 Task 2-Questions to the Applicant 11/31/83 Task 3: Final Report Two months after receiving final

?

comments by NRC and licensee.

M 3.

Progress to Date a".1 The review of the Shoreham internal flood PRA was completed. A re-i assessment was performed by BNL to quantify the core vulnerable frequency caused by internal floods. A letter report documenting the findings was submitted to the NRC on March 16, 1984. The review of the functional event

~

trees continued. Quantitative review of the event trees was initiated.

q Q

4.

Problems and Delays Q

Owing to the delays in receiving the Q-1 responses from LILCO and the sub-i tantial resources required for the review of the flood analysis, BNL anti-cipates delay in the submittal of the final draft. LILCO indicated that

]

preliminary information could be forwarded to BNL by early April.

N 5.

Next Reporting Period i

h Quantitative review of the transient event trees will be completed.
