CP&L Carolina Power & Light Company Shearon Harris Energy & Environrnental Center Route 1. Box 327 New L. North Carohna 27562 Serial: ESS-85-43 Mr. Charles Wakild Regional Supervisor N.C. Division of Environmental Management 7225 Wrightsville Avenue Wilmington, NC 28403 RE: BRUNSWICK STEAM ELECTRIC PLANT NPDES PERMIT NO. NC 0007064

Dear Mr. Wakild:

In accordance with the notification requirements of NPDES Permit No. NC 0007064, this is to inform you that CP&L's Brunswick Steam Electric Plant operated its circulating water system pump on Unit No. 1 with less than two fine mesh screens on January 2,1985 between the hours of 15:45 and 23:08, and on Unit No. 2 on January 3, 1985 between 06:30 and 11:30, and again on January 5, 1985 between 00:13 and 06:47 The circumstances relating to the Unit No. 2 operation with less than two fine mesh screens on both January 3 and 5 is attributable to a false alarm signal indicating excessive pressure differential across the fine mesh screen located on the 2D pump. When this signal is given, an alternate pump is put in service immediately to prevent shut down of the generating unit. No clear, discernible reason has been found as to what caused the false signal.

We suspect the cause may relate to some difficulty in the alarm circuitry.

With respect to the Unit No. 1 operation on less than two fine mesh screens on January 2, this event was related to a malfunction of the 1B pump lubricating oil cooler. The cooler was repaired and the fine mesh screened pump returned to service at 23:08.

If you have any questions with respect to this notification, please contact T. J. Crawford at 919-836-6920.

Yours very truly,

) SL-4 v ...f y R. B. S tarkey, Jr.
