coat Carolina Power & Light Company L' Shearon Harris Energy & Environmental Center Route 1. Box 327 New Hill, North Carolina 27562 Serial: ESS-85-506 APR 111985 g_ pg Mr. Charles Wakild Regional Supervisor N. C Division of Environmental Management 7225 Wrightsville Avenue Wilmington, NC 28403 RE: BRUNSWICK STEAM ELECTRIC PLANT NPDES PERMIT NO. NC00,07064

Dear Mr. Wakild:

In accordance with the notification requirements of NPDES Permit No.

NC0007064, this is to inform you that Carolina Power & Light Company's (CP&L)

Brunswick Steam Electric Plant exceeded the biochemical oxygen demand (BODS ) daily average limitation of 30 mg/l for the sewage treatment facility. This sample, taken on March 27, had a BOD 5 of 33 mg/1.

The cause of the elevated BOD 5 has not been determined, since the total suspended solids (TSS) reading was low, flows were normal, and the sewage treatment plant seemed to be operating properly. Other data results are as follows:

TSS - 8 mg/l flow - 46,500 gpm pH - 7.7 We will continue in our efforts to determine what may have caused the exceedance. If you have any questions with respect to this notification, please contact R. K. Miller at (919) 836-7185.

Yours very truly, Original Signed By R. B. STARKEY, JR.
