- Mr. Charles Wakild Regional Supervisor N.' C. Division of Environmental Management 7225 Wrightsville Avenue Wilmington, NC 28403 RE: BRUNSWICK STEAM ELECTRIC PLANT NPDES PERMIT NO. NC0007064

Dear Mr. Wakild:

.In accordance with the notification requirements of NPDES Permit No.

NC0007064, this is to inform you ' that Carolina Power & Light Company's (CP&L)

Brunswick Steam Electric Plant operated its circulating water system pumps on Unit No.

- 2 with less than two fin

  • mesh screens from January 29,1985 at 15:24 to January 31,1985 at 02:35. ~'

On ' January 29, vibrations were detected in the 480 Volt breaker that conveys

' power. to the motor control center, which operates the screen turning mechanisms. The ibreaker rated at 800 amperes was removed for analysis and the pumps for the coarse mesh screens were put into operation on a spare breaker rated at 600 amperes. In that the 600 ampere breaker did not provide the degree of assurance we believed necessary for the continuously reliable operation of the fine mesh screens, we switched operation

'to coarse mesh screened pumps. In, our judgment, the lower amperage breaker was subject to a greater risk of overload with subsequent loss of availability.

. _. Following its removal from service, the breaker was inspected and tested

" with no defects being noted. Communication with the vendor indicates that vibration -

with this type of breaker is not uncommon. The breaker and fine mesh screens were then returned to service at 02:35 on January 31.

If you have any questions with respect -to this notification, please contact R. K. Miller at (919) 836-7185.
