Flow Exceedance The NPDES permit limit for circulating water flow is 1105 cfs during the period from April through June. On June 29, 1989, Brunswick Unit 2 exceeded this limit for 56 minutes (from 0037-0133), during start-up of the unit.

Due to problems with water in the steam air ejectors, the plant experienced low condenser vacuum during the start-up process.

It was, ther efore, necessary to place the 2C circulating water pump in service, which increased the circulating water flow from 1000 ofs to 1208 cfs.

The increased flow allowed for greater condenser cooling and steam condensation, and increased the condenser vacuum. Failure to increase the vacuum would likely have resulted in the unit tripping off-line.
