Cp&L l Carolina Power & Light Company Shearon Harns Energy & Environmental Center Route 1 Box 327 Serial: ESS-84-290 New Hill, North Carohna 27562 July 27,1984 Mr. Charles Wakild Regional Supervisor North Carolina Division of Environmental Management 7525 Wrightsville Avenue Wilmington, North Carolina 28403 RE: BRUNSWICK NUCLEAR PROJECT NPDES PERMIT NO. NC0007064

Dear Mr. Wakild:

As required by the NPDES permit for this facility, this is to provide you with notification that Unit No.1 at the Brunswick Nuclear Project was operated with less than two fine mesh screens during July. The 1D cooling water pump bay was without screens from July 4, 1984 at 04:45 to July 11, 1984 at 20:03 This initially was due to scheduled preventive maintenance being preformed on the screen. The screen, however, was inadvertently left out longer than the maintenance required due to a pro'olem in miscommunication.

Appropriate action has been taken to reduce the probability of similar occurrence in the future.
