Dear Mr. Wakild:

As required by the NPDES Permit for this facility, this is to provide you with notification that Brunswick Unit No. 1 was operated with less than two fine mesh screens. On August 1, 1984, the 1B circulating water pump was removed from service due to the bar rack in front of the fine mesh screens becoming clogged with marine growth. The water pump bay was out of service from August 1, 1984 at 21:35 to August 2, 1984 at 18:40, while the bar rack was removed and replaced.

On August 2,1984, pumps in both bays equipped with fine mesh screens tripped due to high back pressure across the circulating water pump.

The 1D pump tripped at 18:28 and the 1B pump tripped at 18:30. Both pumps were back in service at 23:00. The excessive back pressure was caused by jellyfish becoming impinged on the screens. This condition was corrected by putting the screen wash system on manual control and rotating the screen at a higher speed. Essentially, this provided a more frequent water wash than is usually necessary to keep the screens clean.

In that we have had a number of instances with either the screens or bar racks clogging we will undertake a review of our operations to see what can be done to either prevent or minimize this problem. We will keep you informed of this review.

If you have any questions concerning this report, please call R. K. Miller at (919) 836-7185.

Yours very truly, Or#' 1ral Signtd trf R R St,arkey, Jr R. B. Starkey, Jr.
